HR reprimands warehouse workers for talking while forcing them to do pointless team-building games: ‘Hooray. I can't wait to have my numbers dip because of bean bag toss day, then get asked why’

  • Warehouse work. Small local warehouse, nothing corporate. It's a drop
  • shipping company basically. Just odds and ends that people order online that are mostly plastic gifts, gag gifts,
  • candles, toys, etc. It was openly joked about by management before that as long as we do our work,
  • don't steal, and don't cause problems, management doesn't really care if we talk, put an earbud in and watch a
  • movie while working, etc., because they're very aware that the workers know these are never going to be
  • Warehouse workers in safety vests raise their hands between rows of shrink-wrapped pallets.
  • necessary items and the work is extremely monotonous to the point it can feel mentally exhausting.
  • The only problems we ever run into is if items don't reach customers in time for
  • them to give it as a gift, if an order gets lost or mixed up, etc. We've even had GOOD comments from customers in
  • their ratings that they didn't expect their items to show up because some of the gifts are so goofy that they thought it might be a scam website.
  • Five people in safety vests sit on a warehouse floor in front of stacked pallets
  • When I started, the overall vibe was pretty high. Yeah, nobody wants to pack plastic unicorns that jelly beans all day, but such is life.
  • Then the warehouse wanted to expand, so they got an HR person for the first time ever.
  • Long story short, the hammer is coming down hard and it's making the vibe, team connection, and
  • work satisfaction a lot worse. HR keeps hiring people who quit, don't work, or otherwise cause problems, then we
  • have big group meetings where we get reprimanded every single day for 'time theft', and yet now we are being expected to play kid's
  • games on the clock. The whole team is reprimanded, and yet it wasn't like this before HR hired a bunch of new people.
  • When I started, the team was small. They then hired TWENTY more people. Mostly high school kids on
  • summer break. The warehouse was crammed. I'm talking it's sometimes impossible to get through the aisles, so you have to wait.
  • So they hired a bunch of kids and are now yelling daily that the kids are showing up late, talking to each other
  • too much, taking extra breaks, etc. The daily berating the entire team takes for this is starting to
  • cause a lot of unease with long time workers. Everyone is getting exhausted from it.
  • It was announced there will not be any raises for associates this year, and that none of us have earned a
  • raise because there are too many mistakes now. The mistakes are mostly happening because we have
  • a slew of new people who are just there to make summer spending money.
  • We had a big team meeting early this morning where the manager was nearly yelling. at us. Visible anger. Told us if
  • he heard a conversation from more than a few feet away, we'd get written up. Told us that he was going to totally
  • ban cell phones from entering the building for employees. Basically told the
  • entire time wes k, too much time is being wasted, etc etc etc.
  • Here's the kicker. HR has been scheduling us for mandatory 'team building' games. Out in the parking
  • lot. We had parking lot beach ball volleyball. This was a team game, so we had to face off again on the clock
  • if our team won the game. We had a snow cone person show up one day. (If we got the snow cone, we had to
  • count the time waiting for it and eating it as our break.) We had a potluck picnic. However, the picnic
  • happened during the work day. You were allowed to go outside to the tables under a party tent to have your food,
  • however, it had to be on your clocked out break. We had 'best childhood photo' contests. One day, we had a
  • 'get to know your coworkers' interview sheet printed out, where we were expected to go to each coworker and ask them something about
  • and return it to HR, so that someone could win a prize from a random drawing. Management came around multiple times trying to get us to fill these sheets out.
  • The kicker was the announcement for this upcoming week. There's another upcoming team game. Also, we're doing terrible as a team and
  • messing up too much. But also, we will need to prepare ourselves for the exciting surprise of a tournament in the parking lot.
  • Hooray. I can't wait to have my numbers dip because of day, then get asked why my numbers were down for that day.
